The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that a child establish a dental home by age 1. While our pediatric dentists and team realize that children at this age are pre-cooperative in the dental setting, a visit to our office at this time can be extremely beneficial for many reasons:
- Infants receive a comprehensive oral evaluation, a risk evaluation for developing dental cavities, and, if indicated, a fluoride treatment. By seeing children at a young age, we hope to promote oral health and decrease the number of children developing cavities.
- We provide parents with guidance regarding many areas of oral health, particularly information on how to lower the risk of dental cavities, which remains the most common disease of childhood. Our top priority is to educate parents on topics that include tooth eruption, tooth trauma, risk factors for dental disease, oral hygiene instruction, appropriate fluoride exposure, and thumb and pacifier habits.
- Establishing familiarity and comfort level with the dentists, office and team that will be the foundation of your child’s dental health throughout her or his life.
We invite you to learn more about the importance and effects of prevention, diagnosing and treating tooth decay, the risks of early childhood caries, and more. We understand that you want to protect and enhance your child’s health in any way, and we want to help you by providing all parents with valuable and trustworthy resources.
